"Under the El" is a DePaul basketball centric blog. The name comes from the nickname, "The little university under the el". The nickname was never more appropriate than during DePaul's glory days under Hall of Fame Coach Ray Meyer. Meyer ran a program that embraced their reputation, and thrived off this success. He efforts produced two NCAA Final Fours, and NIT championship, and college and NBA stars Mark Aguirre, Ray Mikan, Terry Cummings, Dallas Comegys, and Dave Corzine to name a few. Upon his retirement, his son, Joey, became the Head Coach. Joey too lived out the reputation with small budgets and cramped practice facilities. The years following produced three different head coaches, 3 different conferences (for now), some successes, and too many failures.
The Demons are in the process of building a new reputation, under new Head Coach Oliver Purnell. Purnell came to DePaul with a respected reputation as a program builder, successfully reviving downtrotten programs at Radford , Old Dominion, Dayton, and Clemson. His stay at Clemson ended with 6 straight tournament appearances, including 3 NCAA. DePaul has grown in many ways from the days under Coach Ray, but any many ways it continues to remain the little university under the el.
